Purpose
Management of Unitrans daily operations to ensure that safe and reliable transit service is being provided for the University of California and the City of Davis.
The successful candidate may hold this position through expected graduation date based on satisfactory performance in the position.

Duties

I. Receive and resolve daily operational problems that may arise
a. Schedule new service additions (i.e. high school runs, trippers).
b. Re-allocate resources to address unforeseen operational difficulties.
c. Reduce/Increase service when deemed necessary or appropriate.
d. Maintain necessary equipment stocks needed for daily operations.
II. Plan and carry out operations-related projects
a. Work with career and student managers, supervisors, and assistants in an effort to improve the efficiency of operations, address operational needs as they arise, and maintain optimal working conditions for employees.
b. Required to attend at least 3 weekly meetings throughout most service periods.
II. Provide operations-related information and protocol to all Unitrans employees
a. Assist the TDM in the conduct of Priority and Mandatory.
b. Give presentations at Mandatory meetings as needed.
c. Responsible for creating service guides for drivers to reference during Priority.
III. Prepare shifts for Driver/Conductor/Supervisor Priorities, ensure shifts are built correctly
a. Run back end of Mandatory: Trades/Shift Picking
b. Present changes/updates to Operations/Policies during Mandatory and through emails
c. Responsible for creating/updating Column Structure, Column Guides, and Service Guides for Operators/Supervisors
IV. Participate in internal planning and carry out service changes
a. Work with career staff and the planning department to plan service changes.
b. Make arrangements for service changes, including changes to column rotations, updating destination signs, and reallocation of resources.
c. Responsible for building shifts in Uni for drivers, conductors, and supervisors.
V. Maintain communication with other Unitrans managers
a. Work with student managers and career staff to address personnel issues and ensure coverage of shifts.
VI. Review and organize operational paperwork
a. Work with Operations Assistants to keep operational paperwork filed and organized.
b. Work with assistants to transcribe paperwork as needed.
VII. Maintain public relations and investigate operations-related concerns
a. Monitor and investigate operations-related customer concerns.
b. Provide responses to concerned customers.
c. Adjust service, policy, and procedure to meet the public’s needs.
VIII. Responsible for the organization and planning of special events
a. Organize and plan out Summer Camp Trips.
b. Assist with the Bus Roadeo.
c. Picnic Day.
d. Airport shuttle planning.
e. Other Misc. events.
IX. Other
a. Understand and carry out the Unitrans Emergency Operations plan if needed.
b. Record all service actions for future reference.
c. Oversee and delegate duties to Operations Assistants.
d. Participate in the selection and training of the subsequent Operations Manager.
X. Maintain communication with Transit Planning Manager to coordinate NextBus and Column Structures
a. Reduce/Increase service when deemed necessary or appropriate under budgetary constraints
b. Highlight and propose permanent operations modifications & improvements for on-going challenges to career and student management group
c. Report out on operational issues at weekly manager meetings
d. Work with Route Supervisor Manager and supervisors to assess and respond to operational challenges

Skills
Requirements: Must be a Unitrans employee. If you are a driver: a minimum of 500 lifetime hours. All other Unitrans employees: 200 lifetime hours.
Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities:
The skills, knowledge, and abilities necessary to perform the duties of the Unitrans Operations Manager may be acquired, to a large extent, through on-the-job training and experience. In general, fundamental attributes necessary for this position are listed below:
