Purpose

California Aggie columnists are responsible for completing one column each week for the ten weeks of the quarter on a topic of their choosing. Columnists should offer an original, nuanced, and thoughtful perspective on an issue that is relevant to students and the Davis community as a whole.

Duties

As part of your employment, you are required to subscribe to the ASUCD newsletter.

Application: Applicants are required to submit, along with a resume and answers to the vacancy questions:

  1. A specific description of the column’s theme.
  2. Five potential topics and a brief description of each, including your argument and stance.
  3. One sample column, 20 inches. (To calculate column inches, divide word count by 198. 20 inches is roughly 700 to 800 words.)

Please attach these materials to your resume. Applications without supplemental materials will not be considered.

The Aggie receives many applications for columns about national politics, general college life, feminism, and sex, so make sure that your stance on these or other popular issues is nuanced and original. Otherwise, we highly encourage applicants to pursue other topics. The most successful columns will be tightly focused on one issue or group of related issues, make thoughtful, informed, and original arguments, present new information to readers, and be relevant to students and the Davis community as a whole. Columnists are free to write on topics of their choosing, but editors reserve the right to enforce standards of decency, good taste, and professionalism. Content that is deemed to be overly profane, offensive, hateful, or otherwise inappropriate will not be published.

  • Attend quarterly evaluations with desk editor to discuss progress.
  • Attend quarterly Aggie all-staff meetings.
  • Craft photo or graphic ideas to pair with weekly story ideas.
  • This role may require work on nights and weekends.

Skills

  • Columnists should be informed and knowledgeable about their topic of choosing and have have either a personal or professional relationship to the issue they choose to write about. Columnists should demonstrate not only interest but expertise in their subject area.
  • Awareness of audience and readership, and respect for appropriate choices of topic to publish in a professional newspaper
  • Knowledge of standards and ethics of journalism
  • Knowledge of Aggie Code of Ethics and AP/Aggie Style
  • Strong writing, editing and copyediting skills
  • Constructive and quick communication skills
  • Strong organizational skills and time management skills
  • Ability to work well under deadline pressure and deal with adversity and stress

Time Commitment:

  • Approximately 5 - 10 hours per week are required. This amount of time will vary according to the paper's production schedule and other factors.
  • To avoid bias and conflicts of interest, opinion columnists cannot hold any other position at The Aggie while on the opinion desk. Columnists should disclose any real or perceived conflicts of interest to the opinion editor.
