California Aggie columnists are responsible for completing one column each week for the ten weeks of the quarter on a topic of their choosing. Columnists should offer an original, nuanced and thoughtful perspective on an issue that is relevant to students and the Davis community as a whole.
As a part of ASUCD, you agree to subscribe to the ASUCD Newsletter.
Columnists will write one column each week for the 10 consecutive weeks of the quarter, to be published online and/or in print.
Attend weekly desk meetings to pitch story ideas and collaborate with other writers.
Stay up-to-date on relevant news and issues for potential story ideas.
Meet with desk editor one-on-one each week to edit incoming stories for content, grammar and style.
Attend quarterly evaluations with desk editor to discuss progress.
Attend quarterly Aggie all staff meetings.
Craft photo or graphic ideas to pair with weekly story ideas.
This role may require work on nights and weekends.
To avoid bias and conflicts of interest, opinion columnists cannot hold any other position at The Aggie while on the opinion desk. Columnists should disclose any real or perceived conflicts of interest to the opinion editor. Columnists may not be affiliated with the ASUCD government.
Completion of UC Sexual Violence and Sexual Harassment Prevention Training for Non-Supervisors and the Clery Act Training for Campus Security Authorities (CSAs) within two weeks of being hired or have completed these courses in the past two years.
Must complete UC Managing Implicit Bias Series from University of California Learning Center within two weeks of being hired or have completed the series in the past two years.
Columnists should be informed and knowledgeable about their topic of choosing and have either a personal or professional relationship to the issue they choose to write about. Columnists should demonstrate not only interest but expertise in their subject area.
Awareness of audience and readership, and respect for appropriate choices of topic to publish in a professional newspaper.
Knowledge of standards and ethics of journalism.
Knowledge of Aggie Code of Ethics and AP/Aggie Style.
Strong writing, editing and copyediting skills.
Constructive and quick communication skills.
Strong organizational skills and time management skills.
Ability to work well under deadline pressure and deal with adversity and stress.
